Get Outside: Palm Springs For Nature Lovers

Picture of Joshua Trees at Joshua Tree National Park

Beyond the timeless mid-century architecture and glamor of old Hollywood, Palm Springs features a scenic desert landscape you won’t find anywhere else. From breathtaking mountain views to picturesque hiking trails and rejuvenating hot springs, there’s no shortage of outdoor activities in Palm Springs for nature lovers.

The beauty of this desert paradise offers plenty of opportunities for exploration, and we're here to guide you to all the best spots!

Desert Landscapes

Famous for its dry, arid landscape, Palm Springs offers diverse terrain, stunning mountain ranges, and unique plant and wildlife species that are a must-see!

Palm Springs Aerial Tramway

When in Palm Springs, a ride on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is the one activity you can’t miss. The world’s largest rotating tramcar rises from the desert floor to an elevation of 8,516 feet in just 10 minutes, all while giving you a full panoramic view of Coachella Valley and the San Jacinto Mountains!

Once on top, bask in the majestic views from the observation deck, explore the natural history museum and theater, grab a bite at the restaurant, and explore over 50 miles of hiking trails.

Joshua Tree National Park

While Joshua Tree National Park is about a 1-hour drive from Palm Springs, it's definitely worth visiting. Explore the stunning landscape featuring one-of-a-kind rock formations, rugged mountains, and, of course, the iconic Joshua Trees. The national park is also home to various Mojave Desert flora and wildlife, including bighorn sheep, desert tortoises, and various bird species.

Enjoy magical sunrise and sunset views along nature trails, including the Hidden Valley, Barker Dam, and Cholla Cactus Garden. At night, the national park provides a magical opportunity for stargazing. With some of the darkest night skies in Southern California, it’s also designated as a Dark Sky Park, making it an ideal spot for astrophotography.

San Andreas Fault

Take a glimpse into the longest fault line in the world, the San Andreas Fault. There are several ways to view the canyons along the fault line, including exploring trails like Andreas Canyon Trail and Murray Canyon Trail. While the fault itself is not visible at the surface, the overall landscape in this area is influenced by its presence. If you're looking for a more up-close experience, you can join jeep tours or guided hikes that explore deep into the canyons of the fault.

Moorten Botanical Garden

Delight in the beauty and variety of desert plants when you visit Moorten Botanical Garden. Take your time to wander through the different garden areas, cactarium, and plant nurseries and enjoy the extensive collection of desert trees, plants, and cacti. This living museum also features glistening crystals, colorful rocks, ancient fossils, and other peculiar relics.

Sunnylands

Tour the historic Sunnylands estate and stroll along the vast desert art garden, featuring a variety of cacti, succulents, desert trees, and a magnificent view of the San Jacinto mountains. Inside Sunnylands Center, explore and learn from the rotating art exhibitions, take a light lunch or snack at the cafe, and stop by the gift shop for memorabilia.

Hiking Trails

The best way to explore nature in Palm Springs is to hit the trails! From winding paths to rugged mountain trails, hiking in Palm Springs is the perfect escape for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

Mount San Jacinto State Park

Reached via the aerial tramway from Palm Springs, Mount San Jacinto State Park offers a unique alpine hiking experience. The park has an extensive trail system where you can explore over 50 miles of hiking trails. Long Valley is where you'll begin your adventure, and you can choose from various easy, moderate, and difficult trails. If you're up for the challenge, hike to San Jacinto Peak for awe-inspiring scenery and a fantastic view of the valley and surrounding mountains.

Coachella Valley Preserve

The Coachella Valley Preserve is a serene desert landscape home to rolling hills, indigenous wildlife, and the iconic Thousand Palms Oasis. Explore the scenic McCallum Trail, which takes you through the Palm Oasis and Simone Pond, or the more challenging Pushawalla Palms Loop, where you'll trek through rocky ridges.

Indian Canyons

The Indian Canyons in Palm Springs is a breathtaking desert oasis filled with fan palms, rock formations, and flowing streams. Hike along the various easy-to-moderate trails offered in Palm Canyon, Andreas Canyon, or Murray Canyon—all featuring unique but equally magnificent scenery.

Hot Springs

Known for their healing and restorative properties, the mineral-rich waters of hot springs soothe the body and the mind. Just a short drive from Palm Springs in Desert Springs, you'll find several hot springs and spas to choose from, and here are a few of our favorites!
